Funereal Rite of the Hapsburg Monarchs

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed Karl 2

This Sunday, October 21st, sees the memorial of Blessed Karl of Austria. While reflecting upon the life of this most holy monarch, I was reminded of a piece from Pater Edmund Waldstein, who was in attendance at the funeral of Otto von Hapsburg, son of Blessed Karl, and rightful Emperor and King of Austria and Hungary.

The following ceremonial, enacted at the entrance of the coffin to the Hapsburg crypt-church of Kapuzinerkiche was translated into English by Pater Edmund, and was retrieved from here.

(The MC knocks thrice)

Prior: Who desires entry?

MC: Otto, a mortal and sinfull man.

Prior: Then let him come in.

Although robbed of his crown by the machinations of political liberalism, Otto will likely attain to one much more glorious in heaven. Until such a time, however, please offer prayers or Masses for the repose of his soul and his deliverance from Purgatory, so that he might join his illustrious father in the glory of the Kingdom of Heaven.
